From their slightly elevated position in the
hills between Luz and Burgau, Mazuli's Cottages enjoy alluring views over
a semi-rural landscape to the sea.
Relaxing in the flower-filled grounds,
surrounded by the scent of sweet almond blossom and the melodies of
birdsong, it is easy to lose all sense of time and place, yet the small
and pleasantly laid-back beach resorts of Luz and Burgau are just a couple
of kilometres away. Both boast beautiful sandy coves framed by rocky
cliffs, a sprinkling of good local restaurants, a handful of shops and
even the odd bar. For the occasional, livelier night out, the bustling
little town of Lagos with its interesting craft shops and thriving street
art scene can be reached by car in 10-15 minutes.
There are five cottages (plus Maria's own house) offering the choice of an
open plan studio for two people or two one-bedroomed cottages. Inside, the
cottages are roomy and simply furnished, with open plan kitchens and
modern shower rooms. Two of the studios have been newly built for the 2002
season and are located away from the rest of the residence.
All the properties have twin beds, and both one-bedroomed cottages contain
one sofa bed in the living area to accommodate a further one person.
Although three of the cottages are attached, each of these has its own
spacious terrace and garden area with views over the countryside and steps
leading down to the swimming pool.
What adds particular charm to each cottage is the inclusion of Maria's own
ceramic works, for as weIl as running her small residence, she is also a
master potter and ceramics artist. Maria is always happy for guests to
join her in her workshop observe her craft, learn about traditional
techniques and have a go themselves. Azulejo tiles are Maria's particular
speciality and she breathes new life into this traditional Portuguese art
through the introduction of contemporary motifs and colours.
Part of Mazuli's Cottages' appeal is the genuine Portuguese hospitality
that awaits each guest, as Maria who speaks very good
English likes to
ensure that her guests feel thoroughly at home. Each cottage has its own
barbecue and the only other inclusion to these simple, yet conveniently
placed cottages are Maria's dogs, who laze contentedly in the shade of the
almond and pine trees.
